Antony Price, Renowned for Designing for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect behind many legendary styles worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.
Price was best known for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, including the pastel suits that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."
His passing follows just weeks after he unveiled his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to blend tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in crafting sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.
By the 1990s, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as various looks for her American tour following her marriage.
Following a profession lasting half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.
