The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
