Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The former head of state was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than 27 years in incarceration, but he remained under confinement pending court reviews.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" came to light.

This included trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a public vigil that could enable a possible escape.

In a document approving the arrest, the magistrate said information from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's "intention to break the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the protest called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a senator, called for a meeting of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on social media on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your sofa? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the vigil would be so followers could "pray for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with tracking devices.

They also petitioned that the former president be permitted to leave his home for healthcare, saying he needed ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was convicted of orchestrating a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a plan which involved plans to murder his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was prevented because it didn't receive the backing of the military leaders. His successor was took office without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, thousands of his followers invaded and destroyed official structures in the national capital, Brazil's capital.

The police took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The justices found that the protesters had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, restore order and return him to office.

At the moment, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
