Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”
The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.
“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “However, I can share, from our conversation, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that reassures me, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”
New York police shared video stills earlier this week of a suspect in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims were reported.
The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday morning near the famous arena and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “a great deal” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a child.
“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn said. “My mind went to his family, considering his child and my priority is his well-being. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, I’ll keep private, but It is reassuring that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd did not participate during the current season, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.
Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was expected to be a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on 2 August and had to be helped off.
Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while working his way back.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “Certainly, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of UT in 2019. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd inked a single-season agreement valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
