Line of Duty Announced for 7th Series on BBC
The beloved police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh installment, confirmed by the broadcaster.
An upcoming six-part series written by the show's creator starts production in Belfast this spring, as confirmed by the network.
The actress expressed excitement about the comeback, saying she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."
The last series concluded in recent years with a finale that drew in over 17 million viewers. Rumors about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only arrived recently.
New Challenges for AC-12
Series seven will open with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by production details.
Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue tasked to tackle misconduct within the police force.
Their work "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case to date."
Fresh Face and Intricate Plot
An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to become a sexual predator.
Yet, this investigation might serve as a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still operating in the background, plot details suggested.
In a statement, Jed Mercurio said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."
"We're privileged to have had so many followers track the ups and downs of AC-12 over multiple series and we are thrilled to be returning for a new installment."
He added: "Misconduct in this country is supposed to have ended while the series was not airing, so I've been forced to use my creativity."
Actor Responses
Martin Compston called being part of the police drama as "the role of a career".
"Not only the program's popularity but the people I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."
"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.
Vicky McClure stated: "It goes without saying I'm very happy Line of Duty is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"
Adrian Dunbar noted: "As we count down the AC-12 days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be working together soon."
"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those mercurial plot developments."
Series Legacy
Line of Duty premiered in 2012 and evolved into one of the most popular television series of the past ten years, attracting notable actors such as Lennie James.
The BBC has not yet announced when the upcoming series will hit screens.
The conclusion of series six drew the extended plot about the search for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and the creative team said at the time there were no plans for additional seasons.
Nevertheless, the corporation confirmed on this week that a new season is now in development.
