We are checking video footage and photographs shared this morning that depict the scene of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials state fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.

Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that exploded and that he later died of his injuries. A probe is under way.

The initial step to verify the location of where the images were from relied on posts indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.

Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the unique yellow colour of a nearby apartment building seen in the video.

Locating additional structures, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed where the pictures were captured.

Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the visuals had not been digital alteration.
