New Trump Doctrine Identifies The Continent's Fundamental Problem: A Supposed Shortfall of Racism?

Throughout his initial presidency, analysts frequently advised that Donald Trump's remarks should be taken seriously instead of literally. However, subsequent events suggest that that formula could have got it backwards.

An emergent U.S. National Security Strategy alongside a series of statements from administration officials, presidential allies, and Trump himself have precipitated potentially one of the most profound crises for transatlantic unity, the security framework that has underpinned stability and freedom in Europe since 1945.

From Burden-Sharing to Cultural Anxiety

Whereas Trump's earlier critique centered on Europe's alleged failure to fund its own defense, his rhetoric has now evolved into a significantly more disturbing outlook.

Tinged with racial prejudice and a deep-seated disdain for Europe's governing bodies and officials, he has spoken about the risk of societal collapse on a continent he barely knows and has predominantly seen from the interior of a luxury vehicle.

"His recent interview lacking in clear ideological coherence is instead replete with something else: the muddled anxiety of an ageing white man confronted with demographic shifts."

A conspiratorial worldview, which has already influenced harsh U.S. immigration and law enforcement approaches, now appears to be informing the administration's prism of Europe.

The Racist Core

According to this logic, immigration from the global south causes a cultural dilution of European societies, rendering them "weak" under "foolish" leadership and paving the way for their demise. It constitutes an unabashedly racist theory, with the president's allies explicitly endorsing far-right movements across Europe.

Although the general thrust of Trump's racial rhetoric is familiar, its specific implications for European security are critically important.

In the view of the president and his adherents—a group that includes tech magnate Elon Musk, who recently advocated for the breakup of the EU—all politics is inherently transactional. But, while he once claimed was about financial fairness, the current assertion is that a decadent Europe is fundamentally unworthy because of its embrace of multiculturalism.

A Self-Fulfilling Prophecy

In his interview, Trump joins these ideas in a form of wish-fulfillment exercise. He acknowledges that the Kremlin desires a weak Europe. Trump then declares Europe to be weak, and in exposing the fissures in Washington and European capitals, he objectively helps Putin by actively undermining European cohesion—while simultaneously denying any responsibility.

This dynamic is unfolding at perhaps the most critical moment for Europe in decades, amid a brutal conflict in Ukraine and rising provocations across the continent.

As European nations cleaves ever tighter to Kyiv amid continuing warnings of U.S. withdrawal, the peril is that Trump has constructed a justifying narrative for not listening to European leaders.

The European Response

This situation demands a robust reaction from capitals across Europe. While some figures, including Germany's leader, have been blunt in their rebuttals, including the office of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer—have continued with a policy of seeking to placate the White House.

Recently, a Downing Street spokesperson declined to criticize Trump's comments about Europe or his latest criticism on London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

The spokesperson stated, "He has a productive partnership with the American leader and a strong relationship with the Mayor of London, and is focused on cooperating with each to achieve stronger results for the people."

The undeniable truth is that the president intends what he says and repeats them consistently. The time has come to abandon the pretense otherwise.
