The city's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from the affordable apartment that was a central issue in his election bid.

A Historic Residence

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence for most New York City mayors since the World War II era.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core policy, was not quick to announce this decision immediately after his victory in November.

"This decision came down to the security of my family and the importance of directing my complete efforts on enacting the agenda for affordability New Yorkers elected me on," the Mayor-Elect declared on Monday.

Thanking a Neighborhood

He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area renowned for its diverse immigrant populations and international dining.

"To Astoria: thank you for demonstrating the best of New York City," he noted.

"Although my address will change in Astoria, Astoria will always live a part of me and my work," he added.

Political Debate

During his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his key pledge – to freeze the rent – to his personal living arrangements.

Yet his rivals, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for occupying the affordable housing despite the fact that he hails from a famous family.

A House Not Always Used

Not every mayor have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, chose to live in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which ended in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg felt it could serve as a place for official events, and championed an extensive renovation of the older mansion.

A Stately Residence

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will find himself in a setting very different than his previous Astoria digs.

Adorned in pale yellow exterior, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home situated by the East River.

Internally, the ground floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished in the spirit of the home's historical period.

The estate, which reportedly has several bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

Past occupants have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "No matter what anyone says," he insisted in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

His former home is under rent control, a policy where the city sets limits on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.

City residents view rent-stabilized housing as essential protections as the cost of housing exceeds the means of many residents.

Records showed Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from the real estate platform Zillow, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
