Scream OG Star Matthew Lillard Fears He Could Spoil the Series with the Seventh Installment.
The highly anticipated horror film Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters next year, and it is gearing up for a massive gathering of familiar faces. This latest installment signals the legendary return of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the last entry. She will, as usual, be alongside Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only fan-favorite characters returning to the fray.
"Returning to a role you portrayed in your mid-20s when you're in your fifties was a daunting task that gave me sleepless nights," the actor admits.
An Unexpected Comeback for Fallon Favorites
It has been established that three different characters from past films are slated to reappear in this latest sequel, even though meeting their demise in prior movies. The exact mechanism of their return remains a mystery. Fans should get ready for the reappearance of the endearing and nearly unkillable officer Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and third film antagonist Roman Bridger, and a member of the first film's killer pair, Stu Macher.
The Pressure of Iconic Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, returning to the series for the first occasion since a small appearance is a dream come true, though he is apprehensive about the audience response. The actor vividly recalls the precise instant he received the news from the original writer.
"I remember the phone call. I recall the small talk. I remember him asking. That moment is indelibly imprinted on my mind," he says. "Therefore I'm really proud to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has achieved iconic status in the years since the 1996 movie was released, which left Lillard feeling quite trepidatious.
"The reality is, that's a part that lives in infamy, like it or not," he notes. "A part that is now represented in each and every Scream mask that walks around every Halloween."
The Anxiety of Disappointing the Fandom
Now that production has concluded, Lillard is in the same position as everyone else to see the final product. He confesses to feeling immense pressure about hoping not to be the one who ruins the beloved series.
"It's either a success and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard points out. "Going into it, I don't know if the movie's gonna work. I don't know if people are eager to see me. I've definitely seen enough people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this idea?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of pressure to not ruin the series. I don't want people leaving Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"
Speculation and Excitement Run High
While many dedicated fans are excited for Stu's return, the big question of how he and the others return persists. Maybe they exist as manifestations in Sidney's mind, like a previous plot device. Or, maybe they are somehow still living in a strange shared scenario. The chance of a self-referential story, reminiscent of classic genre films, also exists.
Moviegoers will find out the truth when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
