The Details Known Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting

At least 16 lives lost their lives and in excess of 40 were hurt when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.

Reportedly a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the events before the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister expressed that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality in the incident, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain under care, with five in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
