The House of Mouse's Live-Action <em>Moana</em> Trailer Appears Strikingly Similar to a Animated Film
The first preview for the upcoming live-action adaptation of Moana has arrived. Is it surprising that, like most of Disney's real-life reinterpretations, it looks very much like an animated film and much less like a true live-action movie?
Breathtaking Imagery Which Keep an Cartoonish Look
The preview for the new version of Moana is certainly stunning. It includes grand scenery, beautiful soundtrack, and familiar characters. However, it also looks similar to an animated film. The exaggerated effects show figures flying, water defying gravity, and Maui changing into both a bug and a bird. Each of these effects is accomplished through digital effects and CGI. Similar to previous Disney remakes—such as The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, and The Jungle Book—the degree of animation is so high that it prompts the debate: what makes these films “live-action” other than the marketing term?
Story and Music Fans Adore
Whatever the case, this latest Moana seems to be a reimagining of the first tale, including fresh versions of the beloved songs. New Performers and Returning Stars
At the same time, the trailer features a sample of the new take on “How Far I’ll Go,” sung by Catherine Laga'aia. The young actress is taking over the part of Moana from Auliʻi Cravalho, who portrayed the heroine in the original films.
A key figure who returns is Dwayne Johnson, who will again be portraying Maui. Naturally, that role already resembled Johnson, so casting him in the live-action version seems reasonable.
Beloved Mascot Shows Up
Perhaps the most important part of the trailer comes in the final shot. Moana's favorite chicken Hei Hei shows up, screaming at the camera. What better way to present the movie’s true mascot?
