The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Whenever a prominent honors show approaches, you'll find an outcry to include additional classifications to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category during that awards season
  • A different innovative game received no nominations that year
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked recently
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
