The Showrunner Reveals He Has an Idea of How His Sci-Fi Series Might Finish... At the Moment.

Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would emerge as a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”

With the first season of the popular series coming to an end—and a second season greenlit and underway—Gilligan and his team opened up about the fan response and whether it will influence the future direction of Pluribus.

About the Tremendous Fan Response

It would be easy to get sidetracked by the widespread acclaim and fan theories regarding Pluribus. The creator is striving to steer clear of all that.

“The experience is akin to constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being laughing uncontrollably,” he says. “It's amazing, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's by design. I have never searched for my own name online, nor do I ever intend to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”

Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.

“We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by what people are saying.”

“Better to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.

The Central Mystery: Has Vince Gilligan Know the Ending of Pluribus?

Given that the writers aren’t being guided by audience theories, does it imply they have mapped out how Pluribus will finally conclude? Essentially yes… in a way.

“We've developed some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan says. “but we are always ready to throw out a good idea for a better idea. This approach has served us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.”

On the other hand, if they hit a wall, director and writer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to use as a backup.

“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and we're in there,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Of course, one could always use the classics?

“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.

Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV.
